The Pzizz app is useful for people with insomnia who would like to try music and sound-assisted relaxation to improve their sleep. Pzizz is an audio sleep aid app that uses specially designed music, voiceover, and sound effects that change each night and attempts to quickly quiet the mind of the user, put the user to sleep, keep the user asleep, and wake the user up feeling refreshed. It is a collection of original audio tracks to help with sleep and focus and comes with a built-in timer. It has three sections: sleep, nap, and focus.
Users must create an account and log on via their email address or Facebook. Using voiceover narrations based on clinical sleep interventions and specially designed music, Pzizz helps quiet the mind and calm the body into deep rest. Pzizz can continue playing throughout the night to keep a stable sound environment and help to prevent users being woken up by external noises. Used as a morning alarm, Pzizz spends 3 minutes gently bringing the user out of their sleep with personalised wake-up audio. The most effective way to listen to Pzizz is by using headphones or earbuds, but a phone’s built-in speaker will also work for most users. This app has soundtracks designed to aid sleep in either a nap module (for a shorter daytime sleep) or sleep module (for a longer night-time sleep). These soundtracks change every day.The app plays a mixture of music, sound effects, and a male voiceover. The different frequencies in the soundtrack soothe and calm the brain–the app developers describe this as “binaural beats that induce theta brainwaves.” The user can customize numerous settings including the length of the track, the volume of the soundtrack, the volume of the voice, turning off the voice, setting an alarm, and turning off phone notifications. In the pro version, users have access to more soundtracks including a “focus” module, more app functions (such as choosing a female voice), and monthly updates.
The app is based on research–albeit limited research. It has a wide selection of high quality audio tracks to help with sleep and focus, as well as a built-in timer.
The app is fairly expensive for what you get ($10 a month), and the free version is very limited. Evidence to support use of the app appears limited. Some of the voice-overs are based on neurolinguistic programming which is a psychological approach that has been discredited scientifically.
