Description

Sleep Time is a paid app that has been developed to track one’s sleep cycle. It provides information that can be used to make adjustments to a user’s sleep habits to optimize energy level and overall health. Sleep Time works by monitoring the user’s motion, REM cycles, and length of time spent sleeping. It can provide insight on how to fall asleep faster and get better, more restful sleep.

 

Overview

Sleep Time tracks the user’s sleep cycles. When it senses that the user is reaching a period of light sleep that is close to the time window that they selected to wake up, it triggers their alarm and wakes them up. This is supposedly a less jarring way to start one’s day. Once the user has downloaded the app from their device’s corresponding app store, the Sleep Time App is activated by placing one’s phone next to one’s bed while one sleeps.

Sleep Time tracks and analyzes the user’s sleep by using the motion sensor in their smartphone. It stores data that the user can view when they wake up, providing a report on their sleep hygiene. That information can then be used to make adjustments like changing one’s bedtime or the time that one wakes up. The motion sensor in the user’s phone links to the app and tracks one’s movement. Any restless tossing and turning through the night will be picked up and recorded.

When the user falls into periods of deeper sleep, the tracker picks up on their stillness and counts it towards their restful sleep. When the user wakes up, they are able to compare the time spent moving to the time spent lying still.

 

Pros

By linking it to daytime activity trackers, the user is able to see if the amount of activity in their day is affecting their sleep habits. Data can also be collected and shared with a doctor or sleep professional. 

 

Cons

Because the use of the app is dependent on placing it near you while you sleep and it does not correspond with a wearable band, the data that it collects isn’t necessarily as accurate as it could be.
